Object Pose Estimation Papers

CVPR 2024 broadened both onboarding requirements and output scope: CAD, a single reference image, text prompts, and unlabeled object videos can all provide target priors. Pose estimation also extends from static single objects to distributions over multiple solutions, cross-frame tracking, long-term relocalization, and articulated digital twins.

Collection in One Sentence

In 2024, generality became a set of verifiable resource conditions

FoundationPose, SAM-6D, GigaPose, MatchU, and diffusion features all target unseen objects, but differ in their dependence on CAD / reference views, RGB-D, masks or detections, rendered templates, and foundation-model features. Comparisons must specify onboarding, inputs, and the source of front-end predictions.

NOPE, DVMNet, and Oryon further reduce priors to a single reference image, an image pair, or text prompts. SE(3) score diffusion, 6D-Diff, Living Scenes, and DigitalTwinArt extend pose representations to multimodal posteriors, long-term object motion, and articulation states.

Research Trends

Four research trends

Trends summarize technical changes and subsequent influence. Counts use mutually exclusive groups based on each paper's primary contribution, while tags retain cross-area attributes.

01 · Foundation Evidence

Foundation models first reshape correspondence, retrieval, and proposals

Diffusion Features, SecondPose, SAM-6D, and FoundationPose use foundation models to improve image features, instance discovery, cross-view matching, rendering comparisons, and hypothesis scoring, rather than simply regressing SE(3) directly.

02 · Lighter Onboarding

Target priors shift from complete CAD to few references

NOPE uses one RGB reference, DVMNet a reference–query image pair, and Oryon text to identify the same object across scenes. These methods mostly recover relative pose, with different requirements for metric scale, visible surfaces, and reference poses.

03 · Pose as Distribution

Diffusion models begin to represent multiple pose solutions

SE(3) score diffusion samples a posterior directly on the Lie group, while 6D-Diff performs heavy-tailed denoising in 2D keypoint space. They address pose distributions and correspondence noise, respectively, and should not be treated as the same diffusion-pose approach.

04 · Beyond One Frame

Object states expand to video, long-term scenes, and articulated structures

L4D-Track combines tracking and reconstruction; Living Scenes estimates object motion across time and accumulates geometry; DigitalTwinArt recovers parts and joint transformations. HouseCat6D and IPD incorporate materials, sensors, and real deployment into data protocols.

Data Statistics

Research-area distribution

The 23 papers are divided into four groups by primary contribution; a paper may also involve foundation models, correspondences, tracking, or reconstruction.

Unseen objects, CAD, and fast estimation

8

Reduces object-specific training through general-purpose features, RGB-D descriptors, template retrieval, dense correspondences, and modular refinement while balancing accuracy and speed.

Few-reference and relative object pose

3

Replaces full CAD models or dense template libraries with a single reference image, paired RGB-D images, or text prompts to recover the same object's relative pose across views.

Category-level representations, refinement, and multiple solutions

6

Improves robustness through within-category deformation modeling, canonical-space correspondences, multiple solutions from symmetry and occlusion, and diffusion-based keypoint or SE(3) distribution modeling.

Tracking, data, registration, and digital twins

6

Extends static single-object pose estimation to video tracking, multi-instance registration, long-term relocalization, joint industrial sensor evaluation, and articulated-object digital twins.

11 / 23

Directly address objects unseen during training or few-reference relative pose, accounting for nearly half of the collection and forming its largest theme.

5 papers

FoundationPose, Oryon, HouseCat6D, Living Scenes, and Diffusion Features received official Highlight recognition.

2 papers

HouseCat6D and IPD primarily contribute data / evaluation; other works in the dynamics group contribute methods or extended tasks.

Scope, Sources & Deduplication

Counting rules, boundary cases, and deduplication

Inclusion: official CVPR 2024 papers whose primary outputs are instance-level or category-level object 6D poses, relative object poses across images, object pose tracking or refinement, pose-centered data evaluation, or per-object / per-part SE(3) in multi-instance registration, long-term relocalization, and articulation-state recovery.

Excluded: human, hand, and animal pose; camera pose / visual localization alone; grasp / end-effector pose alone; monocular 3D detection predicting only 3D boxes and yaw; and MP-100 category-agnostic pose methods that output 2D keypoints without recovering 3D object pose.

Typical false positives: ESCAPE, Meta-Point, and Dynamic Support localize 2D keypoints on MP-100; MonoDiff outputs driving-scene 3D boxes and orientation; FAR and Point-Line Absolute Pose estimate camera pose; ManipLLM, Diffusion-EDFs, and 6-DoF Grasp Detection output robot end-effector / grasp poses. These are excluded.

Extended collection: MIRETR directly estimates rigid transformations of multiple scene instances of the same model; Living Scenes estimates object 6DoF motion across scans; DigitalTwinArt recovers part segmentation and joint transformations. All explicitly output object or part poses, so they are retained as extended tasks and distinguished from BOP-style single-frame absolute pose.

Deduplication: arXiv, CVF Open Access, project pages, and code repositories count as one canonical CVPR 2024 paper. Existing FoundationPose, SAM-6D, and AG-Pose detail pages reuse stable slugs without duplicate records.
